Love Quotes

If kisses were the water I would give you the sea, if hugs were the leaves I would give you a tree, but if love was time, I would give you eternity.
~Anon.

If love is a language of the heart, my heart speaks volumes.
~P. Colby

Thank you for your sweet, sweet love
You'll never truly know
Just how happy you make me

I miss

I miss the time when we spent the day together.
I miss the when no matter how busy you were, you always have time for me.
I miss the time when you called me just because you want to hear my voice.
I miss the time when I didn't contact you, somehow it bothered you.
I miss the time when your free time is my time.

I hate how we can't spend the day together now.
I hate it how you become so busy right now and it seems that you don't barely have time to check on me.
I hate how you never call me lately.
I hate when i don't contact you and wish you could contact me first, but it never happened.
I hate how I feel now, seems like I don't worth your free time.

I hate how I miss the old times so bad.
I hate how I miss you so bad right now.
I hate how I feel that I'm the only one who feel this way :(

Missing you could turn from pain to pleasure, if I knew you were missing me too.  ~Author Unknown

Fun question to ask your girlfriend

Here's some of questions that you could ask to your girlfriend to break the ice or just simply to know her better

Fun Questions to Ask Your Girlfriend

By: Lydia Nicoll

If you know fun questions to ask your girlfriend, you'll be able to learn more about your new partner than just her favorite color. If you are in the early stages of a relationship and still getting to know your girlfriend, think outside the box to learn more about her and what she's all about.

What was your first impression of me?
You may be surprised at her response, as it could differ greatly from how she sees you now. Follow up, naturally, by sharing your first impression of her.

What is the worst nickname you've ever had?
It could be that the beautiful woman you're dating now was nicknamed Brace Face as a young girl.

What is the best advice you've ever been given?
Did she follow it or did she only realize it was good after the fact?

What is the wildest thing you've ever done?
Don't be surprised if your seemingly innocent girlfriend went crazy on a spring break in Cancun or faced down her fear of heights by going skydiving!

How would you define happiness?
If you're liking where your relationship is going, her answer to this question could prove very useful. You'll be armed with information you can put to use to help make her feel that way.

What are your biggest weaknesses?
They could be personality traits, or things she gives into every time. If she lets you in on this secret, don't take advantage of it!

What is your favorite curse word?
Everyone has one. Sometimes the inspiration or rationale behind a favorite expletive doesn't make sense, but it's almost aways really funny.

What is your definition of cheating? Have you ever been cheated on?
It's good for you to know your boundaries so as to prevent breaking your sweetie's heart. If she has been cheated on before, this may help you understand if trust issues come up in the future.

Have you ever broken a bone?
Your girlfriend may have some interesting stories of how she was a daredevil or a klutz as a kid.

Are you a morning person?
This could end up being vital information if you operate on opposite schedules.

If you could be transported anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
Maybe she has a favorite family vacation spot or a dream to visit a distant land that you can help her achieve.

What is your biggest inspiration?
It could be her high school coach or her favorite book. Find out what inspires her and then be her next motivation to do something great.

What are things you like to do alone?
Everyone likes alone time, so she'll appreciate the way you understand that it's not you, it's her need to focus on herself.

What is your biggest regret?
If it is something she dwells on, you can help her to overcome a past mistake and teach her to learn from it.

Who is your favorite family member?
She could have a wild great-aunt who could become your newest favorite person, too.

What are your biggest passions?
Passion is extremely important for a relationship to succeed. If you support her as she pursues her passions, she'll often transfer some of that passion onto you.

If you could pick one thing to improve about yourself, what would it be?
If it's something physical, you gain insight into about what she is self conscious. Whether physical or personality-based, knowing what easily bothers her can help you boost her confidence.

What do you believe to be the root of most problems in relationships?
There are a variety of answers to this question. Knowing her idea of why relationships fail can help you make sure yours lasts.

Do you have any bad habits?
What she sees as her worst habit might be your favorite quirk. If it does turn out to be annoying, though, you were warned early on.

What makes you laugh the hardest?
Laughter is a wonderful tension diffuser. Knowing how to get her to laugh will make her yours forever.

Ugly

Everyone in the apartment complex I lived in knew who Ugly was. Ugly was the resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and shall we say, love.
The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on Ugly. To start with, he had only one eye, and where the other should have been was a gaping hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot has appeared to have been badly broken at one time, and had healed at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was always turning the corner.
His tail has long age been lost, leaving only the smallest stub, which he would constantly jerk and twitch. Ugly would have been a dark gray tabby striped-type, except for the sores covering his head, neck, and even his shoulders with thick, yellowing scabs. Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction. “That’s one UGLY cat!!”
All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hosed him down, squirted him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction. If you turned the hose on him, he would stand there, getting soaked until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would curl his lanky body around feet in forgiveness.
Whenever he spied children, he would come running meowing frantically and bump his head against their hands, begging for their love. If ever someone picked him up he would immediately begin suckling on your shirt, earrings, whatever he could find.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor’s huskies. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly mauled. From my apartment I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was laying, it was apparent Ugly’s sad life was almost at an end.
Ugly lay in a wet circle, his back legs and lower back twisted grossly out of shape, a gaping tear in the white strip of fur that ran down his front. As I picked him up and tried to carry him home I could hear him wheezing and gasping, and could feel him struggling. “I must be hurting him terribly,” I thought. Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking sensation on my ear.
Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying was trying to suckle my ear. I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped the palm of my hand with his head, then he turned his one golden eye towards me, and I could hear the distinct sound of purring. Even in the greatest pain, that ugly battled scarred cat was asking only for a little affection, perhaps some compassion.
At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try to get away from me, or struggle in any way. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.
Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards, thinking about how one scarred, deformed little stray could so alter my opinion about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love so totally and truly.
Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures, or talk show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. He had been scarred on the outside, but I was scarred on the inside, and it was time for me to move on and learn to love truly and deeply.
It was time to give my all to those I cared for. Many people want to be richer, more successful, well liked, beautiful, but for me, I will always try to be like Ugly.

Trees That Wood

Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, "Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and everyone would see the beauty."
Then the second tree said, "Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull."
Finally the third tree said, "I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember me."
After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. When one came to the first tree he said, "This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter" ... and he began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest.
At the second tree a woodsman said, "This looks like a strong tree, I should be able to sell it to the shipyard." The second tree was happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship.
When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, "I don't need anything special from my tree so I'll take this one", and he cut it down.
When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for. The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark. The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams.
Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time. Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn't think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and he stood and said "Peace" and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat.
Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it.
The moral of this story is that when things don't seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We don't always know what God's plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best.

7 of World's Most Inspirational People

Nick Vujicic: a man with no limbs who teaches people how to get up

Nick Vujicic was born in Melbourne, Australia with the rare Tetra-amelia disorder: limbless, missing both arms at shoulder level, and having one small foot with two toes protruding from his left thigh. Despite the absence of limbs, he is doing surf and swimming, and playing golf and soccer. Nick graduated from college at the age of 21 with a double major in Accounting and Financial Planning. He began his travels as a motivational speaker, focusing on the topics that today's teenagers face.

Nando Parrado: survived airplane crash and 72 days in the Andes

72 - Days of ordeal, Nando Parrado and other survivors of a plane crash in the Andes had to endure before being rescued. Flying over the mountains on a Friday the 13th, the young men and their families who boarded the charter plane joked about the unlucky day when the plane's wing hit the slope of the mountain and crashed. On impact, 13 passengers were instantly dead while 32 others were badly wounded. Hoping to be rescued, the survivors waited in the freezing -37C temperature, melting snow for drinks and sleeping side by side to keep themselves warm. Food was so scarce, everyone had to pool whatever food they can find for a rationed pool.

9 days after the crash, due to dire desperation and hunger, the survivors called for an important meeting. One member proposed that they eat the dead. The 2 hours meeting ended with a conclusion. If any of them died in the Andes, the rest had the permission to use the corpse as food. After 2 weeks, their hope of being found dashed when they found out via their radio transistor that the rescue effort was called off.

On the 60th day after the crash, Nando Parrado and 2 other friends decided to walk through the icy wilderness for help. By the time they left, Nando Parrado said, the crash site was “.. an awful place, soaked in urine, smelling of death, littered with ragged bits of human bone and gristle”. Wearing 3 pairs of jeans and 3 sweaters over a polo shirt, he and his friends trekked the mountains with human flesh as their ration.

Knowing that they must search for rescue, the team endured frozen snow, exhaustion and starvation, walking and climbing for 10 days before finding their way to the bottom of the mountain. The team was finally helped by a Chilean farmer who called the police for help. Parrado then guided the rescue team via a helicopter to the crash site.
On the 22nd December 1972, after enduring 72 brutal days, the world found out that there were 16 survivors who cheated death, in the mountain of Andes. 8 of the initial survivors died when an avalanche cascaded down on them as they slept in the fuselage.

During the ordeal, Nando Parrado lost 40 kg of his weight. He lost half hisfamily in the crash. He is now a motivational speaker.

Jessica Cox: became the first pilot with no arms, proving you don't need 'wings' to fly

essica Cox suffered a rare birth defect and was born without any arms. None of the prenatal tests her mother took showed there was anything wrong with her. And yet she was born with this rare congenital disease, but also with a great spirit. The psychology graduate can write, type, drive a car, brush her hair and talk on her phone simply using her feet. Ms Cox, from Tuscon, Arizona, USA, is also a former dancer and double black belt in Tai Kwon-Do. She has a no-restrictions driving license, she flies planes and she can type 25 words a minute.

The plane she is flying is called an Ercoupe and it is one of the few airplanes to be made and certified without pedals. Without rudder pedals Jessica is free to use her feet as hands. She took three years instead of the usual six months to complete her lightweight aircraft licence, had three flying instructors and practiced 89 hours of flying, becoming the first pilot with no arms.

Sean Swarner: first cancer survivor to complete the 7-summits, the highest peaks of the 7 continents

The 29,035-foot giant known as Mount Everest tortures its challengers with life-threatening conditions such as 100 mph winds, the dramatic loss of oxygen, snowstorms, and deadly avalanches. Climbers of Everest are faced with incredible dangers, but for Sean Swarner the obstacles he overcame prior to his summiting make his story even more compelling.

Sean isn't just a cancer survivor; he is truly a medical marvel. He is the only person in the world ever to have been diagnosed with both Hodgkin's disease and Askin's sarcoma. He was diagnosed in the fourth and final stage of Hodgkin's disease at the age of thirteen, when doctors expected him to live for no more than three months. He overcame his illness only to be stricken a second time when a deadly golf ball-sized tumor attacked his right lung. After removal of the Askin's tumor, Sean was expected to live for less than two weeks. A decade later and with only partial use of his lungs, Sean became famous for being the first cancer survivor to climb Mount Everest.

After the summit of Everest, Sean had the desire and dream to continue moving forward and reaching people around the world. Climbing the highest mountain on each continent became his next goal. Proving to others that anything is possible, Sean successfully summited Mt. McKinley, to be the first cancer survivor to complete the seven summits. You can read more about Swarner's story on his 2007 book.
Keep Climbing: How I Beat Cancer and Reached the Top of the World

Randy Pausch: inspired thousands of people with his dying speech

Randolph Frederick "Randy" Pausch (October 23, 1960 – July 25, 2008) was an American professor of computer science and human-computerinteraction and design at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Pausch learned that he had pancreatic cancer, a terminal illness, in September of 2006. He gave an upbeat lecture entitled "The Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" on September 18, 2007 at Carnegie Mellon, which became a popular YouTube video and led to other media appearances. He then co-authored a book called "The Last Lecture" on the same theme, which became a New York Times best-seller. Pausch died of complications from pancreatic cancer on July 25, 2008.

In his famous speech, Pausch showed a list of his childhood dreams, and explained how he achieved each of them. His dreams were: being in zero gravity, playing in the National Football League, being the author of a World Book Encyclopedia article, meeting and being Captain Kirk, being "one of the guys who won the big stuffed animals in the amusement park", and becoming a Disney Imagineer.

He was given 3 months of life, he lived 3 more years.

Ben Underwood: the boy who could “see” with his ears

Ben Underwood was a remarkable teenager, who loved to skateboard, ride his bicycle and play football and basketball. For the most part, the Californian 14-year-old was just like other kids his age. What made Underwood remarkable was his ability to master these activities despite the fact that he was blind. Underwood had both eyes removed after being diagnosed with retinal cancer at age two. To most people's amazement uponmeeting him, he seemed completely unfazed by his lack of sight, defying common stereotypes about blindness as a disability. So how did he do it? The answer is echolocation: the sonar navigation technique used by bats, dolphins, several other mammals and some birds. As Underwood moved about, he habitually made clicking noises with his tongue; these sounds bounced off surfaces and, with each return, added to Underwood's perception of his surroundings.

He was so good at it that he could tell the difference between a fire hydrantand a rubbish bin, distinguish between parked cars and trucks, and — if you took him to a house he had never been to before — he would tell you he could 'see' a staircase in that corner and a kitchen in the other. He could even distinguish between different materials.

An unflinching faith in God guided Ben and his mother during his last few months as cancer spread to Ben's brain and spine. He eventually died on January 2009 at the age of 16.

Liz Murray: from Homeless To Harvard
Elizabeth "Liz" Murray was born September 23, 1980 the Bronx, New York, to poor, drug-addicted, HIV-infected parents. She became homeless just after she turned 15, when her mother died of AIDS, and her father moved to a homeless shelter. Murray's life turned around when she began attending the Humanities Preparatory Academy in Chelsea, Manhattan. Though she started high school later than most students, and remained without a stable home while supporting herself and her sister, Murray graduated in only two years. She was awarded a New York Times scholarship for needy students and accepted into Harvard University, matriculating in the fall semester of 2000. She left Harvard in 2003 to care for her sick father; she resumed her education at Columbia University to be closer to him until 2006 when he died of AIDS. As of May 2008, she was back at Harvard working towards her degree with plans to graduate with a degree in Psychology in June 2009.

Her life became a movie in 2003 and she now works as a professional speaker, representing the Washington Speakers Bureau. That same gutsy strength that pulled her from the streets now transforms the lives of others, from student groups to business audiences in need of inspiration to overcome their own obstacles. (Link 1 | Link 2)

Korean Fashion

"Many people say that these days, Korean street fashion is becoming more and more at par with other major cities’ fashion like New York and Tokyo. Some fashion critics say that Korean street fashion looks like a carbon copy of New York’s street fashion, and a lighter and milder version of Tokyo fashion, but others applaud Koreans for their fashion sense. If you will go to Korea, you will see distinct characteristics of their street fashion. You can see them too in other countries, but they added a Korean twist that makes them unique, if not original.
For instance, one distinct feature of Korean street fashion is layering. Some people say they got it from New Yorkers. But no matter where they got it from, layering is an important feature of Korean fashion not just because it looks good but also because Korea is a temperate country. They need to layer their clothes to keep their body warm, just like other people in temperate regions.
Another distinct characteristic of Korean street fashion is their oversized t-shirts with English words or phrases. Some people, especially visitors from Western countries, cannot make sense of what is written on the t-shirts but Koreans do not care. After all, they do not wear the t-shirts to communicate with foreigners. They wear them to look good. The printed word or phrases in front of Korean tees only act as designs, not as something that states to the whole world what the wearer believe sin.
Korean women usually pair these oversized tees with a pair of skin tight leggings or skinny jeans. It is very comfortable and it also looks good. They usually wear sneakers or sandals with this outfit.
Mini skirts and knee high boots are some of the most popular Korean street fashion styles. Mini skirts will not make their legs warm but when paired with the boots, it will work in a cold place. And the outfit also looks sexy.
Koreans are also not afraid of colors. They bravely mix and match bright colors that other people will not dare try. This makes the cities of Korea very colourful and happy because of the rainbow of colors. You will see combinations of pink and green, yellow and red, orange and blue, and so on. And for some reason, Koreans can pull it off. They look fashionable and of course, cute, just like most Asian fashions.
You will also see branded clothes and accessories in Korean fashion (surprise, surprise). This is probably typical in almost all city fashions. But it is more obvious in Koreans. Maybe it is the status or satisfaction that makes branded fashion items popular in Korea. Do not be surprised if a woman who is very simply dressed is carrying a branded bag worth hundreds of dollars."

Well, my favorite style as well is Korean style. I found that it's so fascinating and suits me well ^^
But of course it takes great courage to wear it here, since here in Surabaya everyone dressed almost the same.. No one dares to dressed differently..
Here are some stylist street Korean fashion pictures..

History of fashion

Fashion, a general term for a currently popular style or practice, especially in clothing, foot wear or accessories. Fashion references to anything that is the current trend in look and dress up of a person. The more technical term, costume, has become so linked in the public eye with the term "fashion" that the more general term "costume" has in popular use mostly been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while the term "fashion" means clothing generally, and the study of it. For a broad cross-cultural look at clothing and its place in society, refer to the entries for clothing, costume and fabrics. The remainder of this article deals with clothing fashions in the Western world.
Early Western travelers, whether to Persia, Turkey or China frequently remark on the absence of changes in fashion there, and observers from these other cultures comment on the unseemly pace of Western fashion, which many felt suggested an instability and lack of order in Western culture. The Japanese Shogun's secretary boasted (not completely accurately) to a Spanish visitor in 1609 that Japanese clothing had not changed in over a thousand years. However in Ming China, for example, there is considerable evidence for rapidly changing fashions in Chinese clothing.
Changes in costume often took place at times of economic or social change (such as in ancient Rome and the medieval Caliphate), but then a long period without major changes followed. This occurred in Moorish Spain from the 8th century, when the famous musician Ziryab introduced sophisticated clothing styles based on seasonal and daily timings from his native Baghdad and his own inspiration to Córdoba, Spain. Similar changes in fashion occurred in the Middle East from the 11th century, following the arrival of the Turks who introduced clothing styles from Central Asia and the Far East.
The beginnings of the habit in Europe of continual and increasingly rapid change in clothing styles can be fairly reliably dated to the middle of the 14th century, to which historians including James Laver and Fernand Braudel date the start of Western fashion in clothing. The most dramatic manifestation was a sudden drastic shortening and tightening of the male over-garment, from calf-length to barely covering the buttocks, sometimes accompanied with stuffing on the chest to look bigger. This created the distinctive Western male outline of a tailored top worn over leggings or trousers.
The pace of change accelerated considerably in the following century, and women and men's fashion, especially in the dressing and adorning of the hair, became equally complex and changing. Art historians are therefore able to use fashion in dating images with increasing confidence and precision, often within five years in the case of 15th century images. Initially changes in fashion led to a fragmentation of what had previously been very similar styles of dressing across the upper classes of Europe, and the development of distinctive national styles. These remained very different until a counter-movement in the 17th to 18th centuries imposed similar styles once again, mostly originating from Ancien Régime France. Though the rich usually led fashion, the increasing affluence of early modern Europe led to the bourgeoisie and even peasants following trends at a distance sometimes uncomfortably close for the elites - a factor Braudel regards as one of the main motors of changing fashion.
Ten 16th century portraits of German or Italian gentlemen may show ten entirely different hats, and at this period national differences were at their most pronounced, as Albrecht Dürer recorded in his actual or composite contrast of Nuremberg and Venetian fashions at the close of the 15th century (illustration, right). The "Spanish style" of the end of the century began the move back to synchronicity among upper-class Europeans, and after a struggle in the mid 17th century, French styles decisively took over leadership, a process completed in the 18th century.
Though colors and patterns of textiles changed from year to year, the cut of a gentleman's coat and the length of his waistcoat, or the pattern to which a lady's dress was cut changed more slowly. Men's fashions largely derived from military models, and changes in a European male silhouette are galvanized in theatres of European war, where gentleman officers had opportunities to make notes of foreign styles: an example is the "Steinkirk" cravat or necktie.
The pace of change picked up in the 1780s with the increased publication of French engravings that showed the latest Paris styles; though there had been distribution of dressed dolls from France as patterns since the 16th century, and Abraham Bosse had produced engravings of fashion from the 1620s. By 1800, all Western Europeans were dressing alike (or thought they were): local variation became first a sign of provincial culture, and then a badge of the conservative peasant.
Although tailors and dressmakers were no doubt responsible for many innovations before, and the textile industry certainly led many trends, the history of fashion design is normally taken to date from 1858, when the English-born Charles Frederick Worth opened the first true haute couture house in Paris. Since then the professional designer has become a progressively more dominant figure, despite the origins of many fashions in street fashion. For women the flapper styles of the 1920s marked the most major alteration in styles for several centuries, with a drastic shortening of skirt lengths, and much looser-fitting clothes; with occasional revivals of long skirts forms of the shorter length have remained dominant ever since. The four major current fashion capitals are acknowledged to be Milan, New York City, Paris, and London. Fashion weeks are held in these cities, where designers exhibit their new clothing collections to audiences, and which are all headquarters to the greatest fashion companies and are renowned for their major influence on global fashion.
Modern Westerners have a wide choice available in the selection of their clothes. What a person chooses to wear can reflect that person's personality or likes. When people who have cultural status start to wear new or different clothes a fashion trend may start. People who like or respect them may start to wear clothes of a similar style.
Fashions may vary considerably within a society according to age, social class, generation, occupation, and geography as well as over time. If, for example, an older person dresses according to the fashion of young people, he or she may look ridiculous in the eyes of both young and older people. The terms 'fashionista' or fashion victim refer to someone who slavishly follows the current fashions.
One can regard the system of sporting various fashions as a fashion language incorporating various fashion statements using a grammar of fashion. (Compare some of the work of Roland Barthes.)

What do Japanese people wear?

During its early history, Japan adopted Chinese culture, directly or through Korea, including styles of dress. Basic garments were a short tunic or jacket and full trousers, which continued for centuries to be the attire of peasants and servants. In the 7th century the nobility adopted the silk kimono (gown), from the Chinese p'ao or its Korean variant, for court wear. A painting of the pro-Chinese Prince Shotoku shows him in a long brocade coat (the Korean tsurumagi) worn over long trousers with a handsome belt, sword, and wallet. Court ladies wore long, high-necked gowns with long hanging sleeves over trousers. Both sexes used face powder and rouge, and blackened their teeth.

During the Heian period (8th-12th century) elaborate court dress developed, based on Chinese principles of rank indicated by color and design.

Men wore several dark kimonos, fastened on the right, with long, wide sleeves and elaborate girdles, and hakama- full, skirtlike trousers) gathered at the ankles. Kimono sleeves and hakama could be shortened by cords to allow for free movement, during uprisings, for example. Similarly, the kamishimo (stiff garments with winglike extensions), later worn by nobles and samurai over the kimono, could be shrugged off for combat. Heads were shaved almost bare and covered with black lacquered silk hats with stiff projections.

Beautiful and talented women dominated the court of the late Heian, or Fujiwara, period (9th-12th century). Scrolls illustrating Lady Mura-saki's Tales of Genji show delicate ladies in 12 or more airy layers of enormously wide, long kimonos, tied in front with a narrow obi (sash) and trailing over full scarlet hakama, with their unbound hair, often artificially lengthened by added hair, streaming down behind them. Enormous care was spent by both men and women to achieve the right color harmonies of the silks, woven under imperial supervision, according to the season or as inspired by a poem.

Eventually, as Japan became more militaristic and nationalistic, dress became somewhat simpler. During the Tokugawa period (17th-19th- century), men and women wore a floor-length kimono made of 6 strips of 18-inch cloth basted together (to be taken apart for cleaning). It had a roll collar, a "V" neck closing on the right, and hanging sleeves sewed partly up the sides to be used as pockets. Beneath the kimono was an under kimono, with a shirt and loincloth for men and petticoats for women. The kimono was held in place by a wide obi elaborately tied in back. The cotton or silk materials for these garments, as seen in woodcuts of the time, were exquisitely printed or embroidered with striking naturalistic designs. For outdoor and formal wear, a haori, a knee-length black silk coat, printed with white man (family crests), was worn over the kimono. Court ceremonial also required dark silk hakama. Footgear consisted of white cotton tabi (mitten-socks) and, for outdoor wear, sandals or clogs. Women's hair was lacquered into elaborate shapes and ornamented with combs, pins, and flowers.

Peasants wore cotton trousers or white loincloths and happi (short coats). Happi designs, usually white on indigo, identified one's occupation. Women added aprons and often kerchiefs. Both sexes wore sandals, straw raincoats, and wide straw hats. Traditional dress is often worn in villages, for ceremonies, or at home, and is preserved in No and Kabuki theater.
